Pluto's smallest moons officially named

Pluto's two smallest known moons have finally been named after an Internet vote was carried out in February 2012. Formally referred to as "P4" and "P5," the two moons are now known as Kerberos and Styx respectively. 

"I was overwhelmed by the public response to the naming campaign," said Senior Research Scientist at the SETI Insititute in California Mark Showalter. The campaign received almost half a million votes from all over the world.

Kerberos is a three-headed dog in Greek mythology and Styx is the mythological river separating the living world from the dead. Pluto's perviously known moons are also named for Greek and Roman mythological characters.

Another popular name for the moons was "Vulcan," after the home planet of William Shatner's Star Trek character.

Both names were approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) who considered the name Vulcan, but rejected it because it has already been used in astronomy.

"I am grateful to the IAU for giving such careful consideration to our suggestions," said Showalter.

In 2015, scientists plan on getting a closer look at Kerberos and Styx when the first spacecfraft to fly through the Pluto system takes flight. 

"The discoveries of Kerberos and Styx add to the mysteries surrounding the formation of the Pluto system," said Alan Stern, Principal Investigator for the New Horizons spacecraft that will explore Pluto.

60 billion alien planets could support life, study suggests

Though only about dozen potentially habitable exoplanets have been detected so far, scientists say the universe should be teeming with alien worlds that could support plant life. The Milky Way alone may host 60 billion such planets around faint red dwarf stars, a new estimate suggests.

Based on data from NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft, scientists have predicted that there should be one Earth-size planet in the habitable zone of each red dwarf, the most common type of star. But a group of researchers has now doubled that estimate after considering how cloud cover might help an alien planet support life.

"Clouds cause warming, and they cause cooling on Earth," study researcher Dorian Abbot, an assistant professor in geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, said in a statement. "They reflect sunlight to cool things off, and they absorb infrared radiation from the surface to make a greenhouse effect. That's part of what keeps the planet warm enough to sustain life." The habitable zone is defined as the region where a planet has the right temperature to keep liquid water on its surface, thought to be a requirement for life as we know it. If a planet is too far from its star, its water freezes; too close, water vaporizes. Since red dwarfs are dimmer and cooler than our sun, their habitable zone is much cozier than our solar system's.

"If you're orbiting around a low-mass or dwarf star, you have to orbit about once a month, once every two months to receive the same amount of sunlight that we receive from the sun," explained another study author, Nicolas Cowan, a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University.

With such a snug orbit, a habitable planet around a red dwarf would become tidally locked, meaning it would always have one side facing its star, much like the moon faces Earth. This side would see eternal daylight.

In the new study, the researchers used 3D simulations to model the way air and moisture would move over a planet tidally locked around a red dwarf. The team found that any surface water would result in water clouds. What's more, highly reflective clouds would build at the point of the star-facing side where it's always high noon. This would have a cooling effect in the inner ring of the habitable zone, meaning the planets there would be able to sustain water on their surfaces much closer to their star, the researchers say.

The findings could give scientists a new way to confirm the presence of liquid water on the surface of alien planets with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), a new space-based observatory scheduled for launch in 2018, the researchers say.

"If you look at Brazil or Indonesia with an infrared telescope from space, it can look cold, and that's because you're seeing the cloud deck," Cowan said. "The cloud deck is at high altitude, and it's extremely cold up there."

The same could be true of a habitable exoplanet with a highly reflective cloud cover, the researchers say. If JWST detects a similar cold signal over the dayside of an alien world, Abbot said, "it's almost definitely from clouds, and it's a confirmation that you do have surface liquid water."

The research was detailed June 27 in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Russian rocket explodes and crashes in failed launch

A Russian rocket exploded in a massive fireball late Monday, destroying three navigation satellites after a failed launch that appeared to veer out of control shortly after liftoff and crash back to Earth.

The unmanned Proton rocket lifted off from the Central Asian spaceport of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 10:38 p.m. EDT (0238 GMT), where the local time was early morning on Tuesday, July 2.

Video of the launch shows the 17-story rocket rising from its launch pad, then oscillating wildly and rolling as it pitched over and plunged back to Earth. The rocket burst into flames and began to break apart just before slamming into the ground and erupting into a colossal conflagration.

Built by Russia's Krunichev State Research and Production Center, the Proton rocket was carrying three Glonass navigation satellites for Russia. It marked the fifth Proton rocket launch of 2013.

Russia's Proton rockets have suffered five major launch failures since December 2010. The most recent failure was in December 2012, when a Proton rocket launched a telecommunications satellite into the wrong orbit.

The Proton rocket family returned to flight in March of this year and was followed by three successful flights until Monday's failed launch.

This latest Proton rocket incident will likely lead to an in-depth investigation to trace the cause of the launch failure, with further launches awaiting the conclusion of that analysis.

Imported tortoises could replace Madagascar's extinct ones

Two millennia ago, millions of giant tortoises roamed Madagascar, an island nation off the southeastern coast of Africa that is rich in species found nowhere else on Earth. Those tortoises kept Madagascar's unique ecosystem in check by munching on low-lying foliage, trampling vegetation and dispersing large seeds from native trees like the baobab.

When humans began settling on the island about 2,300 years ago, Madagascar's large vertebrate populations were the first casualties. Dozens of species disappeared altogether, including 17 giant lemurs, three pygmy hippopotamuses, two aardvarklike mammals, a giant fossa (a catlike carnivore), eight elephant birds, a giant crocodile and two giant tortoises. With their demise, the composition of Madagascar's ecosystems changed, shrubs and vegetation clogged the forest floor and wildfires became more frequent and intense.

Now, researchers think they've found a way to replace Madagascar's lost giant tortoise species: Bring in some relatives, says Miguel Pedrono, a Madagascar-based conservation biologist with the French agricultural research center CIRAD.

Pedrono's team has identified a very close relative of the extinct giant tortoises, and they plan to transplant a few hundred of them to Madagascar to help fill the ecological gaps left by their extinct kin.

"This project is not an ecological substitution with an analogous species, like what's been done on other Indian Ocean islands; instead, it's a real reintroduction the first one of a megafauna species here," Pedrono said. "This will open fantastic perspectives for conservation in Madagascar." [In Photos: Wacky Madagascar Animals]

Ecological shoes to fill
Using fossils from two species of extinct Madagascan giant tortoises, Pedrono located a group of very similar giant tortoises living on the nearby Aldabra Atoll. The Aldabra giant tortoise's appearance is nearly identical to that of the extinct Madagascan tortoise, and preliminary DNA studies show they're also very similar genetically, Pedrono said. In fact, it's likely that ancestors of the giant tortoises living on Aldabra Atoll made the 249-mile (400 kilometers) swim from Madagascar about 100,000 years ago the blink of an eye, evolutionarily speaking.

Since the tortoises are so similar morphologically and genetically, it's likely they'll fill the same roles in the Madagascan ecosystem, Pedrono said. Madagascar currently has no large animals capable of swallowing and dispersing large seeds, such as those from the baobab tree. Without their crucial landscaping services, including grazing on plants and leaf litter, biomass builds up on the forest floor and frequently causes wildfires.

In addition, many of Madagascar's plants have evolved defenses against large herbivores, such as spines and multiple leaf shapes that protect young sprouts from browsing tortoises. These so-called evolutionary anachronisms could disappear altogether if no species can fill the giant tortoise's shoes, Pedrono said.

To help the Aldabra giant tortoises take over for their extinct kin, Pedrono's team plans to move 300 young tortoises to a nature reserve in western Madagascar, where they'll live in an enclosed pen for five years. That will give researchers a chance to monitor their eating habits and other ecological interactions before the tortoises can breed and disperse across the island.

A 'welcome breakthrough'
The plan seems like a good one, says Elizabeth Hunter, an ecologist at the University of Georgia who has studied giant tortoise restoration on the Galapagos Islands but wasn't involved in Pedrono's research.

"I would fully support going forward with this plan," Hunter said. "Of course, any time you introduce a species, there are many potential pitfalls, but this plan is cautious and will allow researchers to discover those before anything goes too wrong."

Giant tortoises are good species with which to start testing these sorts of ecological replacements, Hunter said. They're very easy to contain with fencing and easy to monitor with tracking devices, and most diseases they could carry are species-specific, meaning they likely wouldn't infect other wildlife. Pedrono's team plans to do thorough veterinary checks to make sure the new tortoises aren't bringing invasive plants or exotic diseases with them to Madagascar.

Similar plans to replace missing giant tortoises have been carried out in several locations, including Seychelles and the Mascarene Islands, and "researchers have seen very good success everywhere," Pedrono told LiveScience's OurAmazingPlanet. Replacement tortoises on the Mascarene Island of Rodrigues are restoring seed dispersal and grazing patterns after only seven years on the island.

The giant-tortoise-replacement scheme could also be a boon for Madagascar's ecotourism industry, Pedrono said.

"Visitors, residents and conservationists are all hungry for successful new conservation initiatives," Pedrono wrote in the March issue of the journal Biological Conservation. "Based on its considerable success elsewhere and the optimistic prospects for Madagascar, this proposed giant-tortoise translocation could represent a welcome breakthrough in the struggle to retain and restore the unique biological riches of Madagascar."

Rare T. Rex skeleton headed for Smithsonian

The Smithsonian is finally set to welcome a T. rex into its hallowed halls.

In October, one of the rare near-complete skeletons of the dinosaur will be hauled from Montana to Washington, D.C., where the fossil will be displayed in the National Museum of Natural History as part of a 50-year loan agreement, the Smithsonian announced Thursday (June 27).

The specimen is known as the Wankel T. rex after Kathy Wankel, a rancher who discovered the dinosaur's arm bones in Montana's Fort Peck reservoir in 1988. [See Photos of the Wankel T. Rex]

"She brought them to the museum to be identified, and I remember our curator Jack Horner asking her 'Can you find this site again?' because what she'd brought in were the first arm bones of a T. rex ever found," Shelley McKamey, the director of the Museum of the Rockies in Montana, told Smithsonian Magazine.

Wankel's discovery was just the tip of the iceberg. In the excavations that followed at Fort Peck, Horner and a field crew found 80 to 85 percent of the dinosaur's skeleton, including the skull, making it one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimens ever found.

The skeleton, which measures 38 feet (11.5 meters) long and weighs 7 tons, was unearthed on federal land, and it belongs to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From 1990 to 2011, the Army Corps loaned the fossil to the Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University in Bozeman, where it was prepared and put on display in its original "death pose." Under the new loan agreement,the Smithsonian will get the Wankel T. rex for 50 years.

The T. rex will be the centerpiece of the museum's new dinosaur hall, which is scheduled to open on the National Mall in 2019 and will feature other key specimens from the Smithsonian's collection of 46 million fossils.

"We're thrilled to welcome this extraordinary fossil to the Smithsonian," Kirk Johnson, director of the National Museum of Natural History, said in a statement, adding that the move will make the Wankel T. rex will be "the most viewed T.rex fossil in the world." The museum has more than 7 million visitors annually, according to the Smithsonian.

T. rex, which roamed North America some 68 million to 66 million years ago, was one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs and one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to exist prior to the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. Fossil hunter Barnum Brown found the first T. rex bones in Montana in 1902 at the Hell Creek Formation.

Voyager reaches mystery interstellar doorstep

Voyager's prolonged journey into interstellar space took another dramatic turn when the intrepid space probe last summer passed into a bizarre and unanticipated cosmic hallway between the bubble of space under the sun's influence and whatever lies beyond.

On the celestial highway since September 1977, the Voyager 1 probe soared past Jupiter and Saturn in 1979 and 1980, respectively, then ended up an a path that led toward interstellar space. Eventually, the spacecraft will get there, but exactly when that will happen -- and what else it may encounter before then -- is anybody's guess.

"The results of the measurements from Voyager have been surprising us not just since last August, but for about the last 2.5 years," astronomer Stamatios Krimigis, with Johns Hopkinds University's Applied Physics Laboratory, told Discovery News.

ANALYSIS: Voyager 1 Can 'Taste' the Interstellar Shore

Scientists thought Voyager 1 had finally passed beyond the heliosheath, the outermost region of space touched by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles continuously flowing the sun. On Aug. 25, 2012, Voyager suddenly found itself in an uncharted region of space, marked by the abrupt disappearance of particles from the sun and the sudden rise of particles emanating from interstellar space.

"As far as we could tell there was absolutely no solar material in the vicinity of the spacecraft and there hasn't been since then. At the same time, the cosmic rays coming from outside the system started to increase. We all thought at the time that, by God, we were probably out of the solar system," Krimigis said.

But there were two other puzzling bits of data that didn't fit that scenario.

ANALYSIS: Voyager 1 Detects Weirdness at Solar System Edge

The first mystery was why the magnetic field Voyager measured was still aligned like the sun's -- and even more perplexing, why the magnetic field suddenly strengthened.

Scientists had expected to see a different magnetic orientation once Voyager was in interstellar space.

The second conundrum was why the cosmic ray particles were not evenly distributed. The thinking was -- and is -- that cosmic rays, which emanate from distant supernova explosions all over the galaxy, should be uniformly spread out in every direction in interstellar space.

The best scientists can conclude is that Voyager is in some sort of foyer where particles from inside and outside the solar system can easily flow, but which is not quite yet in interstellar space. The rather unpoetic name they came up for this zone is the "heliosheath depletion region."

"What we have is kind of a hybrid. The magnetic field still seems to be the solar magnetic field, not the interstellar magnetic field, so how do you define interstellar medium if that's the case? If you really need to finally reach the case where both the magnetic field and the plasma are from other stars, then we're still not there," lead project scientist Ed Stone, with the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, told Discovery News.

Scientists have no idea how much longer it will take Voyager to reach the next and presumably last leg of its journey into interstellar space, but the proverbial clock is ticking.

The spacecraft, which is powered by the slow decay of radioactive plutonium, will begin running out of power for its science instruments in 2020.

"By then, we would have shut off everything we can shut off other than the instruments and will have to turn off the first instrument. As time goes on, each year there are four watts less available, we'll have to turn off the second instrument," Stone said.

By 2025, Voyager, which was originally designed to last just five years, will be completely shut down.

Voyager is now about 122 times farther from the sun than Earth. At that distance it takes radio signals from Earth traveling at the speed of light 17 hours to reach the spacecraft.

A sister spacecraft called Voyager 2 is taking a different path toward interstellar space and has not yet encountered the panoply of twists and turns on the solar system's exit ramp -- and it never may.

"Voyager 2 has seen exactly what the models predicted we would see, unlike Voyager 1, which didn't," Stone said.

The region where the heliosheath and interstellar space connect, where Voyager 1 is located, may be a local phenomenon, he added.

The research appears in this week's Science.

Traces of wartime famine unearthed in Jerusalem

Archaeologists may have discovered evidence of a dire famine that gripped Jerusalem during a Roman siege nearly 2,000 years ago.

Cooking pots and a ceramic lamp were found in an ancient cistern near the Western Wall, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced. Excavators believe these artifacts were left in the underground chamber by Jewish residents who were trying to eat what little food they had in secret during the war.

"This is the first time we are able to connect archaeological finds with the famine that occurred during the siege of Jerusalem at the time of the Great Revolt," Eli Shukron, excavation director for the IAA, said in a statement. The Great Revolt was the first of several Jewish uprisings against Roman rule that began in A.D. 66. The revolt was ultimately unsuccessful. The Romans eventually took back Jerusalem from the Jewish rebels and destroyed much of the city, including the Second Temple.

"The complete cooking pots and ceramic oil lamp indicate that the people went down into the cistern where they secretly ate the food that was contained in the pots, without anyone seeing them, and this is consistent with the account provided by Josephus," Shukron added.

The historian Flavius Josephus provided the seminal account of the Roman siege of Jerusalem and the desperate hunger that accompanied it in his book "The Jewish War" (Simon & Brown, 2013). He wrote about how residents in the city concealed their food and ate in secret, fearing it would be stolen by the rebels.

"For as nowhere was there corn to be seen, men broke into the houses and ransacked them," Josephus wrote. "If they found some they maltreated the occupants for saying there was none; if they did not, they suspected them of having hidden it more carefully and tortured them."

Josephus added that many residents exchanged their possessions for small amounts of food that they took to secret parts of their home, "where some through extreme hunger ate their grain as it was, others made bread, necessity and fear being their only guides. Nowhere was a table laid."

IAA officials said the artifacts will be on display next week in a study conference on the City of David organized by the Megalim Institute.
