LEAD, S.D. –  Nestled nearly 5,000 feet beneath the earth in the gold boom town of Lead, S.D., is a laboratory that could help scientists answer some pretty heavy questions about life, its origins and the universe.

It's hard to spot from the surface. Looking around the rustic town, there are far more nods to its mining past than to its scientific future, but on Wednesday, when part of the closed Homestake Gold Mine officially becomes an underground campus, Lead's name will be known in scientific circles as the place where the elusive stuff called dark matter might finally be detected.

Unimpressed? Consider this: It's sure to earn itself a reference on TV's "The Big Bang Theory."

"This year, 2012, is going to be a very significant year because we get to turn the ... detector on and know very soon whether we have actually found dark matter or not," said Rick Gaitskell, a scientist with Brown University who has worked alongside dozens of scientists over the past few years to move forward with the Large Underground Xenon experiment -- or LUX -- the world's most sensitive dark-matter detector.

For most people, dark matter is a term that made their eyes glaze over in science class. But for Gaitskell and scientists like him, it's the mystery meat of existence.

"It makes up a huge amount of the universe," said Kevin Lesko, of Lawrence Berkley National Lab, who is the principal investigator for the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

They know it's there by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, it's so far undetectable. Scientific papers and books have been dedicated to what it could be, but so far, Gaitskell -- who's said he's been "hunting dark matter" for 23 years -- and his colleagues know only that it could explain why the universe isn't made up equally of matter and antimatter. That, in turn, could explain how the world as we know it came to be.

"It has to be there because of its effects through gravity, but it also has to have properties that make it very unusual -- otherwise, we would have detected it already," Lesko said.

Regular matter -- people and planets, for example -- make up about 4 percent of the total mass-energy of the universe, he said. Dark matter makes up about 25 percent.

"So it's five times as much as us, and yet we've never directly observed it."

Scientists hope the lab buried 4,850 feet beneath the earth's surface will change that.

On Wednesday, Gov. Dennis Daugaard is to give tours of the underground lab for scientists, dignitaries and media. William Brinkman of the federal Department of Energy confirmed his plans to attend Tuesday, said Bill Harlan, spokesman for the research facility.

The unveiling has been a long time coming: The Homestead mine opened during the Black Hills' gold rush in 1876 and outlasted many counterparts. In the late 1990s, it still employed about 1,000 people, but as the value of gold dropped, it became clear that the mine's days were numbered. It shuttered for good in 2003.

The science community seized on the closure. Dark matter is too sensitive to detect in normal laboratories, but one so far underground would help shield it from pesky cosmic radiation. Also, the LUX detector is submerged in water, further insulating it.

Gaitskell said he's worked with 70 scientists and 14 institutions over the past four years to finally make the LUX experiment a reality.

That detector will be in the Davis Campus, named after Ray Davis, who won a Nobel Prize for Physics for an experiment he started in 1965 inside the then-working mine. Nearby in a new hall called the Transition Area will be the Majorana Demonstrator Experiment. That's aimed to search for a rare form of radioactive decay, which could help physicists understand how the universe evolved.

Experiments are set to begin this year, Harlan said. All told, the site has cost more than $300 million -- a mix of private donations and state and federal funding. Among the contributors: a $10 million Housing and Urban Development grant, $40 million from the South Dakota Legislature and $70 million from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.

About 70 former mine workers now work for the lab. Greg King, a lifelong Lead resident, is one of them.

"The whole town was built up around the Homestake," King said. "As the property closed and people left, a lot of employees left. Now, there's a lot of excitement in town. People are very thrilled that the Homestake is once again, albeit not as a mine."

Liz Tiger, who owns a consignment store on Main Street, said the resurrection of the mine represents hope for Lead, a town of about 3,100 residents about a half-hour from the Wyoming border. Three generations of Tiger's family worked for the mining company.

"The economy up here really died after Homestake shut down," she said. "It was absolutely devastating."

Had it not been for Deadwood, Lead's higher-profile neighbor that draws about 2 million tourists a year, the town might have gone under, she said.

"I was raised through Homestake. I was very sad when it was shut down. (The mine) definitely needed to be used for something."

An elusive striped rabbit that has rarely been photographed has been caught on film deep in the forests of Sumatra, thanks to camera traps set up in an isolated mountain region of the Indonesian island.

The Sumatra striped rabbit is not only extremely rare, it is also extremely shy, emerging from hiding only under the cover of darkness. The secretive, nocturnal creatures were snapped scooting across the crowded forest floor in two national parks in 2011.

"We were really excited as soon as we saw the rabbit photos because we knew that they were not photographed very often," said Jennifer McCarthy, a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and one of the researchers who oversaw the camera-trap project.

Research suggests the species is the rarest of the lagomorphs, the taxonomic order that includes rabbits, hares and pikas.

Despite the dark, grainy images, McCarthy recognized the rare, striped mammals almost immediately.

"With their unique coloring, they are pretty unmistakable," she told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

The rabbits are listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, an independent body that assesses the status of species around the globe. In 1996, the rabbits were listed as critically endangered; it's not clear what prompted the change.

The rabbits, known for their short ears and the distinctive wide, dark stripes that adorn their faces and bodies, live only in Sumatra. They have rarely been seen in the wild, and were photographed for the first time only in 1998, according to a statement from UMass Amherst.

McCarthy said the newly published photographs show that that there are at least a few of the animals living in two different national parks.

It's not clear if additional populations are lurking in other regions of the island, but the recent find should encourage local officials to protect the parks from development and human encroachment, McCarthy said.

SpaceX signs contract to launch world's most powerful rocket

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), which designs and launches rockets as well as spacecraft, said on Tuesday it signed the first commercial contract to launch the world's most powerful rocket.

The Falcon Heavy rocket will launch a communications satellite into geosynchronous orbit (a circular orbit around the Earth nearly 24 hours long) for satellite services company Intelsat, according to a press release. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"SpaceX is very proud to have the confidence of Intelsat, a leader in the satellite communication services industry," said Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO and chief designer, in a statement. "The Falcon Heavy has more than twice the power of the next largest rocket in the world. With this new vehicle, SpaceX launch systems now cover the entire spectrum of the launch needs for commercial, civil and national security customers."

Capable of lifting 117,000 pounds to low Earth orbit and over 26,000 pounds to geosynchronous orbit, the Falcon Heavy is the most powerful rocket in the world, the company said.

Intelsat, which operates the world's largest satellite fleet, praised the advanced vehicle, which they said provides them with expanded opportunities.

"Timely access to space is an essential element of our commercial supply chain," Intelsat Chief Technology Officer Thierry Guillemin said. "As a global leader in the satellite sector, our support of successful new entrants to the commercial launch industry reduces risk in our business model."

SpaceX is building a Falcon Heavy launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, but no launch date has been specified as of yet.

Using a Falcon 9 rocket, SpaceX made history in May by sending the first commercially bankrolled cargo load to the International Space Station.

The new Falcon Heavy consists of a standard Falcon 9 rocket with two additional Falcon 9 first-stage rockets acting as liquid strap-on boosters.

With their limited functionality and dependence on a reliable web connection, Chromebooks have been a hard sell to even the geekiest of early adopters. But Google and Samsung have decided to give the Chromebook concept a second try with two new devices: the Chromebook Series 5 550 notebook and Chromebox Series 3 desktop.

Google says boot times for the Chromebook Series 5 550 and Chromebook Series 3 are a blistering 7 and 5 seconds, respectively. Both units will also come loaded with the latest version of Google's Chrome OS, complete with its Aura UI.

The 12.1-inch Chromebook Series 5 550 , the follow-up to Samsung's 12.1-inch Chromebook Series 5 gets an upgraded processor, an Intel Core-series CPU rather than an Atom processor, and a 16GB SSD for local storage. The Series 5 550 also gets 4GB of RAM, up from the Series 5's 2GB. The Series 5 550 also features a built-in webcam, 2 USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, and Kensington lock slot.

Like the Series 5, the Chromebook Series 5 550 is available in two configurations, a $449 Wi-Fi only model and a $549 3G model.

In addition the the Chromebook Series  5 550, Samsung and Google have also debuted the new Chromebox Series 3 mini-desktop computer. Specs include an Intel Core-series processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 16GB SSD six USB 2.0 ports, DVI port and Bluetooth 3.0. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a built-in media card reader. The Series 3 will set you back just $329.

According to Google, neither unit will support Google Drive out of the box, but a future update will eventually bring the cloud storage service into the fold. Check back for our full review of the Chromebook Series 5 550 in the coming weeks.

Two small asteroids buzz Earth in one-two punch

Two small asteroids zipped close by Earth in back-to-back flybys of the planet Monday (May 28) and Tuesday. While both space rocks came well within the moon's orbit, they posed no danger to our planet, NASA scientists say.

The newfound asteroid 2012 KP24 zoomed by Earth Monday (May 28), coming within 32,000 miles (51,000 kilometers) on its closest approach, according to astronomers at NASA's Asteroid Watch at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"We'll have a close but very safe pass of asteroid 2012 KP24 May 28," scientists with NASA's Asteroid Watch program assured via Twitter.

Asteroid Watch is part of the Near-Earth Object Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The NEO office oversees the agency's efforts to detect, track and characterize potentially dangerous asteroids or comets that could zoom close to Earth.

The recently discovered asteroid 2012 KP24 measures approximately 69 feet (21 meters) across and did not pose any threat to Earth during its flyby, NASA scientists said.

But this space rock is not the only one that paid a close visit to our planet this week.

Another small asteroid, called 2012 KT42, flew past Earth early today (May 29). The asteroid came within 8,950 miles (14,400 km) on its closest approach, which easily fits between the Earth and moon's orbit. For comparison, the moon typically circles Earth at a distance of about 240,000 miles (386,000 km).

While asteroid 2012 KT42 was only discovered yesterday, the space rock did not pose any impact threat Earth when it made its closest approach at 3:07 a.m. EDT (0707 GMT), NASA scientists said.

The small space rock is only about 16 feet (5 m) wide, which means it would not pack much of a punch even if it did hit the planet, according to astronomer Tony Phillips on his website Spaceweather.com, which monitors major space weather and skywatching events.

"Even if it did hit, this space rock is too small to cause significant damage," Phillips wrote. "It would likely disintegrate almost entirely in the atmosphere, peppering the ground below with relatively small meteorites."

Astronomers with NASA and other organizations regularly scan the skies in search of potentially dangerous near-Earth objects.

Experts estimate that space rocks that measure about 460 feet (140 m) across or larger could cause widespread devastation if they impact the planet. A much larger asteroid, however, would be required to cause destruction on a global scale.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. –  Apple chief executive Tim Cook sought to clarify his image Tuesday as leader of the gadget giant in the wake of his high-profile predecessor Steve Jobs.

Cook, speaking at the "D: All Things Digital" conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., noted some specific areas where Apple was operating in new ways under his leadership, by expanding philanthropic efforts and more closely scrutinizing its outsourced manufacturing in China.

But Cook also cited areas where Apple has no plans to change: Staying extremely secretive about new products and fighting to protect its innovations in court if necessary.

Cook became CEO of Apple last August, when company co-founder Jobs resigned in the midst of a battle with pancreatic cancer. Jobs died a little more than a month later.

Cook would only make passing mention of two of Apple's key Silicon Valley peers, Google and Facebook. When he was asked what he thinks of Google's innovations, he responded, "I love Apple's."

Jobs was known to have taken offense at Google's mobile phone technology, which spawned a series of devices that resemble Apple's iPhone. Apple has been embroiled in patent litigation with companies making phones based on Google's mobile software, including Samsung.

Cook was also asked about Facebook, the social network that has had a conspicuously small presence on Apple devices despite boasting more than 900 million users.

"I think we can do more with them," Cook said. "They have their way of doing things, but people can say that about us as well."

Another area of further innovation for Apple will be the Siri voice-command technology featured in the latest version of the iPhone -- which has been criticized for being gimmicky and of little practical use.

"There's more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this," Cook said.

Cook wore a black T-shirt beneath a collared shirt and jacket that recalled Jobs' signature black turtleneck and at one point appeared on the verge of being overtaken with emotion as he recalled the period of Jobs' death as "absolutely the saddest days of my life."

Late last year, Cook said, "somebody kind of shook me and said, it's time to get on."

Now, Cook said, he is at ease with making Apple his own.

"I've never really viewed or felt the weight of trying to be Steve, it's not who I am, and it's not my goal in life. I am who I am, and I'm focused on that, and being a great CEO," he said.

Cook also said the company has now begun "micro-managing" working conditions at China-based factories that manufacture products for Apple. One goal has been to reduce overtime. "We're measuring working hours for 700,000 people, I don't know of anybody else doing that," he said.

Cook said he is making his own decisions as a leader in part due to some advice Jobs gave him prior to his death, when he asked that Cook not rely on his legacy.

"He told me to never do that, to never ask what he would do," Cook said. "Just do what was right."

Greek experts find Roman wrecks nearly a mile deep

ATHENS, Greece –  Two Roman-era shipwrecks have been found in deep water off a western Greek island, challenging the conventional theory that ancient shipmasters stuck to coastal routes rather than risking the open sea, an official said Tuesday.

Greece's culture ministry said the two third-century wrecks were discovered earlier this month during a survey of an area where a Greek-Italian gas pipeline is to be sunk. They lay between 1.2 and 1.4 kilometers (0.7-0.9 miles) deep in the sea between Corfu and Italy.

That would place them among the deepest known ancient wrecks in the Mediterranean, apart from remains found in 1999 of an older vessel some 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) deep off Cyprus.

Angeliki Simossi, head of Greece's underwater antiquities department, said sunken ancient ships are generally found 30-40 meters (100-130 feet) deep.

'These discoveries are crucial hard data showing the actual patterns of ancient seafaring and commerce.'

Most scholars believe that ancient traders were unwilling to veer far offshore, unlike warships which were unburdened by ballast and cargo.

"There are many Roman shipwrecks, but these are in deep waters. They were not sailing close to the coast," Simossi said.

"The conventional theory was that, as these were small vessels up to 25 meters (80 feet) long, they did not have the capacity to navigate far from the coast, so that if there was a wreck they would be close enough to the coast to save the crew," she said.

U.S. archaeologist Brendan Foley, who was not involved in the project, said a series of ancient wrecks located far from land over the past 15 years has forced experts to reconsider the coast-hugging theory.

"The Ministry of Culture's latest discoveries are crucial hard data showing the actual patterns of ancient seafaring and commerce," said Foley, a deep water archaeology expert at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Royal, director of the Key West, Florida, based RPM Nautical Foundation, said that in many cases — as when winds threatened to push ships onto rocks — ancient mariners made a conscious effort to avoid coastal waters.

Royal, whose foundation has carried out a series of Mediterranean underwater projects, said the depth of such finds is immaterial from an archaeological standpoint.

"In antiquity ships didn't sail around with depth finders and keep track of how deep they were," he said. "It was more how far they were on the surface in relation to land. After 30 meters of depth the boat's safe, so if it's 30 meters (100 feet) or 3,000 meters it's a little irrelevant."

The remains were located during an investigation that covered 200 square kilometers (77 square miles) of seabed off the islands of Corfu and Paxoi.

A Greek oceanographic vessel using side-scan radar and robot submarines took footage of scattered cargo — storage jars, or amphorae, used to carry foodstuffs and wine — cooking utensils for the crew, anchors, ballast stones and what could be remains of the wooden ships.

The team also raised samples of pottery and a marble vase.

The one ship was carrying the kind of amphorae produced in north Africa, and Simossi said it might have sailed from there and headed for Greece after a stop in Italy.

Foley said deep wrecks are very important because they are almost always more intact than those found in shallow water.

"So they contain far more archaeological and historical information than other sites," he said in an email. "As a result, the deep sea floor of the Mediterranean is the world's greatest repository for information about the earliest civilizations."

The discovery comes amid Greece's acute financial crisis, which has also taken a toll on funding for archaeology.

Simossi said her department, which monitors a vast area rich in ancient wrecks and sunken settlements, had its staff reduced by half because of non-renewed contracts and retirees who were not replaced.

"There were 89 of us and there are 45 left," she said. "We are fighting tooth and claw to keep afloat."
