A grainy sonar image captured off an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati might represent the remains of the Electra, the two-engine aircraft legendary aviator Amelia Earhart was piloting when she vanished on July 2, 1937 in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator.

Released by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), which has long been investigating Earhart's last, fateful flight, the images show an "anomaly" resting at the depth of about 600 feet in the waters off Nikumaroro island, some 350 miles southeast of Earhart's target destination, Howland Island.

According to TIGHAR researchers, the sonar image shows a strong return from a narrow object roughly 22 feet long oriented southwest/northeast on the slope near the base of an underwater cliff. Shadows indicate that the object is higher on the southwest (downhill side). A lesser return extends northeastward for about 131 feet.

"What initially got our attention is that there is no other sonar return like it in the entire body of data collected," Ric Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, told Discovery News.

"It is truly an anomaly, and when you're looking for man-made objects against a natural background, anomalies are good," he added.

A number of artifacts recovered by TIGHAR during 10 expeditions have suggested that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, made a forced landing on the island's smooth, flat coral reef. Gillespie and his team believe the two became castaways and eventually died there.

NEWS: Pieces of Amelia Earhart's Plane Located?

In July 2012, Gillespie and his crew returned to Nikumaroro to carry out an underwater search for the plane with a torpedo-shaped Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV).

Multi-beam sonar mounted on the ship mapped the underwater terrain and the AUV collected a volume of side-scan data along roughly 1.3 nautical miles of shoreline off the west end of Nikumaroro, while the ROV, capable of reaching depths of 3,000 feet, produced hours upon hours of high-definition video.

Plagued by a number of technical issues and a difficult environment, the hunt did not result in the immediate identification of pieces from Earhart's Lockheed Electra aircraft.

As they returned from the data collection trip, TIGHAR researchers began reviewing and analyzing all of new material recovered from the underwater search.

They identified a small debris field of objects at the depth of 200 feet, which TIGHAR forensic imaging specialist Jeff Glickman described as consisting of man-made objects.

Dec. 17, 2010: Bone fragments and artifacts turn up on a deserted South Pacific island.

Located distinctly apart from the debris field of the SS Norwich City, a British steamer which went aground on the island's reef in 1929, the site features objects which appear consistent with the interpretation made by Glickmann of a grainy photograph of Nikumaroro's western shoreline.

The grainy photo was shot by British Colonial Service officer Eric R. Bevington in October 1937, just three months after Amelia's disappearance on July 2, 1937. It revealed an apparent man-made protruding object on the left side of the frame.

Forensic imaging analyses of the picture found the mysterious object consistent with the shape and dimensions of the wreckage of landing gear from Earhart's plane.

"The Bevington photo shows what appears to be four components of the plane: a strut, a wheel, a worm gear and a fender. In the debris field there appears to be the fender, possibly the wheel and possibly some portions of the strut," Glickman told Discovery News.

A new twist in the search occurred last March when Richard Conroy, a member of TIGHAR's on-line Amelia Earhart Search Forum, spotted an anomaly in a sonar map posted online.

"The anomaly gives the impression of being an object that struck the slope at the base of the second cliff at a depth of 613 feet, then skidded in a southerly direction for about 131 feet before coming to rest," Gillespie said.

In its underwater search, TIGHAR missed the place where the anomaly appears by only a few hundred feet.

"If only we had continued just that little bit further," Wolfgang Burnside, president of Submersible Systems Inc and the inventor and pilot of ROV used to conduct the underwater search, said.

He found the target "very promising, definitely not a rock, and it's in the correct location on the reef."

"It also shows what I interpret as 'drag' markings on the reef above and to the north behind the target, as it obviously hasn't quite settled into its final resting place yet," Burnside said.

Gillespie offers another explanation. "The apparent ground scar behind the object may also be a trail of internal components that spilled from the ripped-open fuselage."

PHOTOS: Jars Hint at Amelia Earhart as Castaway

The anomaly appears to be the right size and shape to match the Electra wreckage and lines up nicely with the Bevington Object and Jeff Glickman's debris field.

According to Gillespie, the evidence found so far suggests a reasonable sequence of events:

• Earhart makes a safe landing on the dry reef and sends radio distress calls for at least five days.

• Before the seventh day when Navy search planes arrive, rising tides and surf knock the Electra off its landing gear and push it over the reef edge into the ocean, leaving a landing gear assembly (the Bevington Object) behind, jammed in the reef. Earhart and Noonan become castaways on the uninhabited, waterless atoll.

• The landing gear assembly stays jammed in the reef at least until October when Bevington took the photo, but at some point it breaks free and sinks, ending up in the catchment area at 200 feet where Glickman spotted pieces of it in the video.

• After going over the edge, the airplane is battered by the surf and sinks within a few minutes in the shallow water just past the reef edge. Subsequent storms cause pieces of wreckage to wash ashore where they are found and used by the island's later residents.

• Eventually the fuselage goes over the cliff, hits the slope at the bottom of the cliff at 600 feet and skids for a ways before coming rest more or less on its side with the starboard-side wing stub sticking up

The only way to be absolutely sure that the anomaly is indeed Amelia's plane is by sending another expedition to the island, but that will depend upon the ability of TIGHAR, a nonprofit institute that relies upon sponsorships and contributions from the public, to raise the needed funding.

"We currently project that it will take nearly $3,000,000 to put together an expedition that can do what needs to be done. It's a lot of money, but it's a small price to pay for finding Amelia," Gillespie said.

The frozen body of a 10,000 to 15,000 year old mammoth found on a remote island in the Arctic Ocean has yielded a stunning find: blood so well preserved that it flowed freely from the ancient mammal.

Scientists with the Research Institute of Applied Ecology of the North, North-Eastern Federal University, and the Russian Geographical Society announced on Wednesday the amazing news, following the study of the carcass of a female mammoth in good preservation on Lyakhovsky Islands of Novosibirsk archipelago.

'The blood is very dark, it was found in ice cavities below the belly and when we broke these cavities with a poll pick, the blood came running out.'

"Interestingly, the temperature at the time of excavation was -7 to – 10 degrees Celsius [19.4 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit]. It may be assumed that the blood of mammoths had some cryoprotective properties."

The muscle tissue of the frozen carcass was also stunning -- the color of fresh meat, Grigoriev said, totally unlike meat that is centuries old.

"The fragments of muscle tissues, which we've found out of the body, have a natural red color of fresh meat. The reason for such preservation is that the lower part of the body was underlying in pure ice, and the upper part was found in the middle of tundra."

Wooly mammoths are thought to have died out around 10,000 years ago, although scientists think small groups of them lived longer in Alaska and on Russia's Wrangel Island off the Siberian coast.

Scientists already have deciphered much of the genetic code of the woolly mammoth from balls of mammoth hair found frozen in the Siberian permafrost. Some believe it's possible to recreate the prehistoric animal if they find living cells in the permafrost.

Those who succeed in recreating an extinct animal could claim a "Jurassic Park prize," the concept of which is being developed by the X Prize Foundation that awarded a 2004 prize for the first private spacecraft.

A raven-sized creature that lived about 150 million years ago is back on its perch, a new study says.

Widely pegged as the earliest known bird, Archaeopteryx's status was called into question two years ago by Chinese scientists. They proposed yanking the prehistoric creature off the "bird" branch of the evolutionary family tree and moving it onto a closely related lineage of birdlike dinosaurs.

Now an international team led by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences believes Archaeopteryx (ahr-kee-AHP'-teh-rihx) should indeed be considered a bird.

The famed fossil was discovered in 1861 in Germany and quickly became an evolutionary icon. Archaeopteryx possessed part-bird, part-reptile traits. It sported broad wings and feathers like a bird, but it also had three-fingered claws, sharp teeth and a long bony tail similar to a dinosaur.

Fossil discoveries of feathered dinosaurs in northeastern China over the past two decades have challenged Archaeopteryx's place in bird evolution.

The latest evidence suggesting Archaeopteryx had more in common with birds than dinosaurs comes from the discovery of an intact, well-preserved skeleton of a previously unknown dinosaur dubbed Aurornis xui. It lived during the middle to late Jurassic era in China's Liaoning province where many early birds and feathered dinosaurs roamed.

Belgian researcher Pascal Godefroit and his team compared the anatomy of the newly discovered dinosaur fossil to a variety of birds and dinosaurs to determine their relationship. The analysis, published in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature, classifies Archaeopteryx back into the bird category.

Lawrence Witmer, a bird evolution expert at Ohio University, called the analysis compelling. But he said it's still tough to tease apart that segment of the family tree.

"All of these little feathered species running and flapping around ... were all very similar," Witmer, who had no role in the research, said in an email.

Facebook has agreed to review its policy concerning rape jokes, after several activism groups organized a Twitter protest calling attention to the fact that pages making light of rape, assault and battery are allowed to exist on the social network.

Facebook's policy forbids posting content that is "hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."

However, the site has allowed pages about attacking, raping and abusing women; many of these pages include graphic and offensive images.

A few weeks ago, several advocacy groups decided to do something about it. And Tuesday, May 28, Facebook responded.

'Our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like.'

Mobilizing primarily via Twitter under the hashtag #FBRape, organizations like The Everyday Sexism Project and Women, Action and the Media, as well as thousands of individuals, launched a grassroots protest that aimed to put pressure not only on Facebook, but on the companies that advertise with the social network as well. "We are calling on Facebook users to contact advertisers whose ads on Facebook appear next to content that targets women for violence, to ask these companies to withdraw from advertising on Facebook until you take the above actions to ban gender-based hate speech on your site," announced Women, Action and the Media in an open letter to Facebook.

The letter identifies a number of Facebook pages that the organization argues should be taken down under Facebook's own policy, as well as several screenshots of the offensive content.

The protestors identified several specific examples that they found to be in violation of Facebook's policy on hate speech, including pages titled "Violently Raping Your Friend Just For Laughs" and images of battered women captioned "[She] didn't know when to shut up." The full list can be found at this link (trigger warning for rape, battery and sexual assault).

Over the course of two weeks, protestors sent over 50,000 tweets with the #FBRape hashtag, as well as hundreds of emails.

Many of these focused on calling out major companies who advertise on Facebook, such asDove, Zipcar and Sky TV, sending screencaps of the companies' ads appearing next to graphic images of battered women and crude rape jokes.

Some of the companies, such as Audible.com and Procter & Gamble, pointed out that they have little control over which pages their ads appear on.

Protestors countered that as long as the companies were advertising on Facebook, they could not guarantee that their ads would not appear next to these offensive images. Eventually, thirteen companies agreed to pull their Facebook advertising, including Jump! Magazine and Nissan UK.

Finally, on the same day that major news outlets Buzzfeed and BBC News covered the protest, Facebook responded.

"In recent days, it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate," Facebook's Marne Levine, VP of Global Public Policy for Facebook wrote on the website on May 28, 2013.

According to the statement, Facebook will review and update their guidelines and training for the people who evaluate reports of impermissible content. The social network also promises to work with groups such as Everyday Sexism to keep lines of conversation open.

The second great Internet revolution is coming, and it will be bigger than the first, one man says. He should know: He helped make the first revolution happen.

Internet pioneer Steve Case co-founded AOL as "America On-Line" in 1991. At the time, fewer than 1 percent of the world was online. According to the latest Pew research, more than 80 percent of Americans use the Internet today.

And they'd better brace themselves, Case said: Things are about to get even better than the last cat video you saw.

'More important innovation will occur in this second Internet revolution than in the first.'

"As I think about the future of the Internet, I break down the past 25 years and the next 25 years into separate revolutions," Case told FoxNews.com.  "I believe more important innovation will occur in this second Internet revolution than in the first."

The first revolution started in the 90s with the release of the web and consumer email, Case said. The goal was to get everyone online and make the Internet part of everyday life. That goal has largely been achieved, Case said.

"Now that the Internet is ubiquitous and mobile, we've entered the second revolution, which will improve education, healthcare, energy, and transportation."

Carsharing companies like Zipcar are one example. When the company launched 10 years, ago, things were slow going. After all, it's difficult renting a car by the hour from nearby locals without the Internet in your pocket. "But now because of iPhones and Androids, people in cities can easily share cars instead of owning them, which in turn will decrease pollution, save money, and improve efficiency," the 54 year-old Case says.

In other words, Zipcar may be to transportation, what AirBNB has been to the hotel industry. But the former was only made viable by ubiquitous, mobile internet.

Like transportation, change in higher education is also overdue, according to entrepreneurs. While the Internet has already introduced free college courses, higher education still hasn't changed that much since the 1700s, Case says. Despite the incredibly interactive resource of the Internet, students still pay an exponentially larger share of money to sit in a classroom, buy books, and listen to a professor.

The same goes for healthcare, another industry tech entrepreneurs are trying to shape for the future. Consider the current system: You sit in a lobby. Then sit in another lobby. Then you're asked to take your pants off or wear a funny jumpsuit. Or you're required to do a similar song and dance every time you need a semi-annual antibiotic, birth control, or routine treatment, all in exchange for more money, of course.

Companies like VGo Communications aim to change that. As featured in a recent Verizon commerical, their robotic telepresence technology hopes to play a greater role in remote healthcare and education. After all, people have been telecommuting to work for more than a decade. It only makes sense that the same could be said of "telemedicine" to the doctor or "tele-education" to class.

"There has been a global focus on the use of telemedicine as a tool to cut down healthcare costs and bring about mammoth savings," a recent BCC Research report asserted. "Implementation of the new U.S. healthcare law will, if anything, intensify this focus. In the near to mid-term, telemedicine technologies offer one of the few ways of enabling healthcare personnel to meet the increased demand without unacceptable delays or other forms of de facto rationing."

As for energy-related revolutions aided by the Internet, small examples include smart thermostats like Nest and Internet-enabled appliances that can be monitored, controlled, and optimized via the web or mobile app.

So what's holding the second revolution back? Two things, experts say. "We have infrastructure issues on the network and server side that all need to evolve to get us where we want," says Ben Bajarin, a consumer technology analyst at Creative Strategies.

In other words, the computers aren't quite ready.

But in many ways they are. After all, free Skype calls replaced expensive "via Satellite" calls years ago, making video calls available to anyone with an internet connection and cheap web cam.

So why haven't doctors, educators, energy, and transportation authorities jumped on board already?

Obviously, there's no "easy button" for consumer revolutions. And each industry has its own set of unique challenges. But the real culprit is greed and fear of change, Case says. "A lot of people getting paid hope it stays that way," he says. "That's the way it has worked for centuries."

To be fair, Case stands to gain from companies like Zipcar and Living Social that are fighting for change. After all, he invests in them as CEO of Revolution, a private equity firm.

But coupled with the obvious improvements the Internet has already made to work, communication, and cat-sharing videos, it's hard not to get excited for the next revolution to happen upon hearing Case's recent commencement speech at the University of North Carolina.

"I've learned over the years that the world is divided into attackers and defenders," he told some 18,000 Tarheel graduates. "The attackers are the people with bold, innovative ideas who are trying to disrupt the status quo and usher in a better way. The defenders are the incumbents who try to defend what they have. We need to bring an attacker mindset to whatever we choose to do."

Internet 2.0. There's not an app for it. But there seems to be a way.

Is that a rat on Mars?

A photo from the Mast Camera on NASA's Curiosity rover reveals the dusty orange, rock-strewn surface of the Red Planet -- and captures a dusty orange rodent hiding among the stones, starry-eyed enthusiasts claim.

The photo, taken Sept. 28, 2012, depicts the "Rocknest" site, where NASA's rover took a scoopful of sand, tasted it, and determined it was full of weathered basaltic materials -- not unlike Hawaii, the space agency's scientists said last year.

'Note its lighter color upper and lower eyelids, its nose and cheek areas, its ear, its front leg and stomach.'

No word on how the rodent tasted, however.

The "creature" was identified on the UFO Sightings Daily website, where its finder, ScottCWaring, held tight to his opinion: That's one darn cute rodent on Mars.

"Note its lighter color upper and lower eyelids, its nose and cheek areas, its ear, its front leg and stomach. Looks similar to a squirrel camouflaged in the stones and sand by its colors," he wrote. "Hey, who doesn't love squirrels, right?"

Others pointed out that the similarity in coloring and position mean it was most likely just a rock, fingering the psychology phenomenon known as pareidolia, a propensity to pick out faces from everyday objects and structures.

To take advantage of this psychological phenomenon closer to home, designers at Berlin's Onformative studio developed an algorithm that scans the surface of the earth with Google Maps, picking out geographical structures that are likely to be construed as having face-like features, science blog iO9 recently pointed out.

Their algorithm found faces in fields, mustaches in mountains, hills with actual eyes.

Perhaps the algorithm should be turned loose on Mars?

Twenty-five percent of the moon's impact craters may retain substantial remnants of the asteroids that created them, a new study finds.

The surprising result suggests that scientists will have to work a little harder than they had perhaps anticipated to figure out what the moon is made of, researchers said.

"Future studies of the moon's composition will have to show that exposed surface rocks really come from the moon and were not delivered by impacts, especially for unusual or exotic minerals," said co-author Jay Melosh of Purdue University. [10 Surprising Moon Facts]

Melosh and his colleagues, led by Zhong Yue of Purdue and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Remote Sensing Applications in Beijing, used computer models to simulate the formation of lunar craters by asteroid impacts.

They determined that one-quarter of space rock strikes on the moon likely occur at a velocity of 26,800 mph or less — blazingly fast, to be sure, but not fast enough to obliterate the asteroid.

Other simulations performed by the team show that, at such impact speeds, little asteroid material is vaporized and lots of it is hurled against the walls of the newly formed crater. If the crater is at least 12 miles or so wide, impactor remnants tend to accumulate in a central peak as the crater collapses under the moon's gravity.

The findings of the new study, which was published online May 26 in the journal Nature Geoscience, could explain the occurrence of minerals called spinels and olivines in the central peaks of large lunar craters such as the 58-mile-wide Copernicus.

Spinels and olivines are common in many asteroids, so it's possible that these and other minerals that scientists had assumed were indigenous to the moon were actually delivered via space rock strikes, researchers said.

"We cannot infer the deep composition of the moon from rocks in the centers of large craters without more care than has been used to date," Melosh told SPACE.com via email.

The findings have other intriguing ramifications as well. Some material blasted off Earth by colossal impacts long ago, after all, is thought to have hit the moon at relatively slow velocities.

"This raises the possibility of finding early Earth material, ejected by collisions billions of years ago, in massive deposits on the moon, and suggests yet another explanation for the spinels: that they are deposits derived from the Earth's upper mantle, emplaced long ago on to the moon and reworked," Erik Asphaug of Arizona State University writes in an accompanying commentary in the same issue of Nature Geoscience.

"Even more provocative is the suggestion that we might someday find Earth's protobiological materials, no longer available on our geologically active and repeatedly recycled planet, in dry storage up in the lunar 'attic,'" Asphaug added.
