Scientists break record by decoding DNA of 700,000-year-old horse

From a tiny fossil bone found in the frozen Yukon, scientists have deciphered the genetic code of an ancient horse about 700,000 years old -- nearly 10 times older than any other animal that has had its genome mapped.

Scientists used new techniques and computing to take DNA from a 5-inch fossil fragment -- most of which was contaminated with more modern bacteria -- and get a good genetic picture of an ancestral horse. The work was published Wednesday in the journal Nature and discussed at a science conference in Helsinki.

The research gives a better insight into the evolution of one of the most studied mammals. Perhaps more importantly, it opens up new possibilities for mapping the genetic blueprints of all sorts of ancient animals from early human ancestors to mastodons to mammoths to bison, said study lead authors Ludovic Orlando and Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen.

This "is breaking the time barrier," Willerslev said.

The previous oldest animal fossil genetically mapped had been an ancient relative of Neanderthals called the Denisovans, from about 75,000 years ago, found in a Siberian cave.

The ancient horse was probably about the size of current Arabian horses, the researchers said. It didn't have the same genes for large muscles that make today's breeds good for racing, and it was larger than researchers once thought, Orlando and Willerslev said.

The new mapping techniques, which involve all sorts of technical changes, could be used not just with fossils from frozen areas like Canada's Yukon and Russia's Siberia, but also from more temperate climates, and may eventually allow researchers to map animal genomes from 1 million years ago, Orlando said.

Ross MacPhee, curator of mammals at the American Museum of Natural History, who wasn't part of the research, said the accomplishment suggests "there's no reason in substance why we couldn't go back further."

"I think it's cool," said another outside expert, Edward Rubin, who heads the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute and has deciphered Neanderthal and cave bear DNA.

"We can always keep our fingers crossed that (DNA from) an ancient hominid will be found in one of those environments that have been cold," perhaps even the last common ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans, he said.

Orlando and Willerslev said it doesn't have to be that cold, but much of the most ancient human development was in Africa where the hotter climate makes DNA disintegrate faster. Still, there were enough hominids in temperate climates to give hope for older genome sequencing of some of our ancestors, they said.

There was a lot of junk in the Yukon fossil that wasn't horse but bacteria, Orlando said. He said for every 200 DNA molecules they sequenced, only one was from the horse.

The research estimated that the evolutionary tree split that led to horses on one branch and donkeys on the other happened about 4 million years ago.

The analysis also found new evidence that an endangered animal called the Przewalski's horse, found in Mongolia and China, is the last surviving wild horse. It is genetically distinct from domestic horses.

The good news: NASA has discovered the 10,000th near-Earth object (NEO).

The bad news: At least 100,000 are still out there.

NEOs are asteroids and comets that approach Earth, coming within 28 million miles (45 million kilometers) of our planet during their orbit around the sun. The vast majority of these chunks of space rock and ice are harmless — they just fly right by, minding their own business, in well-defined, well-known orbits.

NEOs also come in a range of sizes, from the pipsqueak few-footers to the rather terrifying whopper, 1036 Ganymed, that measures 25 miles (41 kilometers) across.

And now NASA has discovered the 10,000th NEO — a 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide asteroid affectionately named 2013 MZ5.

"Finding 10,000 near-Earth objects is a significant milestone," said Lindley Johnson, program executive for NASA's Near-Earth Object Observations (NEOO) Program at NASA Headquarters. "But there are at least 10 times that many more to be found before we can be assured we will have found any and all that could impact and do significant harm to the citizens of Earth."

That means there's at least 100,000 of these (potentially) marauding space rocks still to be tracked down, a feat that NASA is tackling head-on.

The latest asteroid was spotted by the Maui-based Pan-STARRS-1 telescope as part of a NASA-funded, University of Hawaii-managed PanSTARRS survey. 2013 MZ5 is by no means a hazardous asteroid and is not expected to be any threat to Earth of the foreseeable future.

The discovery of 2013 MZ5 is the latest in a long line of NEO discoveries, most of which have been made by NASA projects over the last 15 years.

"The first near-Earth object was discovered in 1898," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "Over the next hundred years, only about 500 had been found. But then, with the advent of NASA's NEO Observations program in 1998, we've been racking them up ever since. And with new, more capable systems coming on line, we are learning even more about where the NEOs are currently in our solar system, and where they will be in the future."

Although many more space rocks remain to be found, it's believed that the majority of big, potentially hazardous NEOs have been discovered. Of the 10,000 discoveries so far, roughly 1,000 are larger than one-kilometer across. From this size and up, should one hit Earth, it would have global consequences for the planet and all life on it. So far, none of these large objects pose a threat. Even better news is that only a few dozen of the largest NEOs remain to be found.

As the NEOs get smaller, they're harder to detect, meaning the vast majority of undiscovered NEOs are small, but not insignificant, objects. For example, any space rock measuring 30 meters (100 feet) or bigger can cause significant damage to a populated region should it hit. Less than one percent of NEOs 30 meters and smaller have been spotted so far.

In 2005, NASA was directed by Congress to find 90 percent of all NEOs 140 meters (460 feet) or larger. It is believed there are around 15,000 NEOs of that size, 30 percent of which have been discovered so far.

So NEO programs are finding new objects at an average rate of 3 per day, greatly enhancing our ability of tracking and identifying potentially hazardous NEOs. But as can be seen from the numbers, it's not necessarily the largest, civilization-ending NEOs that may cause concern, it's the smaller, city-killing NEOs that may take us by surprise.

As the asteroid that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February showed us, it doesn't take a huge piece of space rock to cause widespread damage and injury to a populated region. The Chelyabinsk meteor was only 15 meters (50 feet) wide.

The world is going green, but do we want to go yellow? Recycling our paper, plastic and metal goods has become common practice, but now scientists are recycling urine to extract precious nutrients before they hit the sewage system.

"Our attitude and whole approach to recycling will need to change as we come under increasing pressure to conserve valuable, non-renewable resources like Phosphorus," chief executive of the Institution of Chemical Engineers David Brown said. 

Urine is high in phosphates, one of the key elements needed in order to sustain life; they help to promote good bone and teeth health and are also used as crop fertilizers. The concern is that they are becoming a scarce resource on earth.

"Phosphorus is one of those elements which is vital to life, but its importance is not widely known," Brown explained. "As well as a fertilizer, it has many industrial uses and can be found in products as diverse as processed cheese, fizzy drinks, matches, detergents and toothpaste."

Researchers at the University of Florida were able to extract up to 97% of phosphates from urine in less than five minutes during their lab experiments.

Urine contains high levels of phosphates but once it becomes contaminated and diluted, like in the sewage system, it makes the collection of phosphates more difficult.

The hope is that their findings will lead to larger-scale system to be installed in homes and communities to extract phosphates from their urine before it is rid of its nutritional value.

If successful, expect to see waterless urinals and 'no-mix toilets' in the near future.

"The research is another great example of chemical engineers providing alternative approaches and solutions to the creation of more sustainable approaches to issues like waste water management and recycling."

A fossilized, cigar-shaped creature that lived about 520 million years ago has been unearthed in Morocco.

The newfound species, Helicocystis moroccoensis, has "characteristics that place it as the most primitive echinoderm that has fivefold symmetry," said study co-author Andrew Smith, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London, referring to the group of animals that includes starfish and sea urchins. Modern echinoderms typically have five-point symmetry, such as the five arms of the starfish or the sand dollar's distinctive pattern.

The primitive sea creature, described June 25 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, could even change its body shape from slender to stumpy. Researchers say it is a transitional animal that could help explain how early echinoderms evolved their unique body plans, Smith said. [Photos of Newfound Species & Other Cambrian Creatures]

Cambrian explosion
In 2012, Smith and his colleagues were excavating in sediments dating to about 520 million years ago in the Anti-Atlas Mountains in Morocco, when they uncovered several specimens of the strange fossil.

The creature lived on the ancient supercontinent called Gondwana during the Cambrian Explosion, a period when all creatures inhabited the seas and life on the planet diversified dramatically.

One of the oldest known echinoderms, Helicoplacus first unearthed in the White Mountains in California had a spiral but asymmetrical body plan. And all modern echinoderms start off as larvae with bilateral symmetry, raising the question of how and when the creatures' distinctive five-point body plan originated.

New creatures
H. moroccoensis, named after the country where it was found, had a cylindrical body that extended up to 1.6 inches (4 centimeters) long. The echinoderm's mouth was on the top of its body, and it sported a cup made of checkered plates with a small stem at its base. It had a latticelike skeleton made of calcite.

"It's a cigar-shaped beast, and it was able to expand and contract that cigar shape," Smith told LiveScience. "Sometimes it could be short and fat, and sometimes it could be long and thin."

The tiny sea creatures changed shape using a spiraling arrangement of five ambulacra, or grooves coming from the mouth that opened and closed to capture bits of food floating in the water.

The newly discovered species is the oldest known echinoderm with five ambulacra, and could shed light on how echinoderms evolved their unique body plans, Smith said.

H. moroccoensis was also found in sediments containing several other bizarre echinoderms, many of which had wacky body plans, ranging from completely asymmetrical to bilaterally symmetrical. That wide variety suggests the creatures were going through a period of dramatic diversification around that time period, Smith said.

"The important thing about the whole fauna is that there is already, by this time, a remarkable diversity in body form," Smith said. "And yet this is only 10 [million] to 15 million years after the calcite skeleton evolved."

When NASA scientists want to simulate a journey to Mars they head to Chile's Atacama Desert.

Known as the driest place on the planet, the 41,000 square mile collection of salt lakes, sand and lava is the closest place on Earth that resembles to surface of the red planet and the testing ground for a solar-powered rover that NASA hopes will scan the surface of Mars for microbes and other forms of life.

Looking like a bathtub on wheels, the rover, nicknamed Zoe, sports four bike tires, a main base and solar panels on top. It was designed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and began its two-week field trip to northern Chile on June 17.

SUMMARY

Due to its dry climate and high altitude – about 10,000 feet above sea level – both researchers and filmmakers have used the Atacama for their work.

How it handles the rough terrain of the Atacama Desert could decide how NASA equips its next space trip to Mars in 2020.

"Scientifically, the study helps us understand how life survives in extreme environments with implications to both Earth and Mars," said David Wettergreen, research professor in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute and principal investigator for the Life in the Atacama project, according to Space.com. "Technologically, we are learning about the mechanisms and the algorithms that will enable us to explore the subsurface of other planets."

Due to its dry climate and high altitude –about 10,000 feet above sea level– both researchers and filmmakers have used the Atacama Desert for their work.

In 2003, a group of researchers for Science recreated the tests used by the Viking 1 and Viking 2 Mars landers to detect life on the red planet. The researchers were unable to find any signs of life in the Atacama soil.

NASA researchers have also used work from the Phoenix Mars Lander in the area and the Atacama is also a testing site for the NASA-funded Earth-Mars Cave Detection Program.

Besides testing on the ground, the high altitude, nearly non-existent cloud cover, dry air, and lack of light pollution and radio interference have made the Atacama one of the world's best places for astronomical observations.

The La Silla Observatory and The Paranal Observatory, which includes the very Large Telescope, are both housed in the desert.

The newest instalment of top-selling video game Saints Row has been banned in Australia, becoming the first title to be refused classification after the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in January this year.

"Saints Row IV" will be banned from sale in Australia under the ruling, announced by Classification Board acting director Donald McDonald late on Tuesday.

'[It features] interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context.'

McDonald said the Board had refused an adults-only rating to the game due to "interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context" and "elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards."

McDonald said "Saints Row IV" was the first game banned from sale since the new video game classifications came into action six months ago, with other titles including "Ninja Gaiden: Razor's Edge" and "Mortal Kombat" receiving an R18+ rating.

"Apart from today's decision, since the beginning of the year, the board has classified 17 games R18+ under the new guidelines," he said.

"Saints Row IV" publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that it will edit the game just for Australia and resubmit it to the Classification Board.

"Volition, the developer, are reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence without reducing the outlandish gameplay that Saints Row fans know and love," the company said.

Astronomers discovered a solar system packed of planets, three of which are habitable, using new observations and existing data of the Gliese 667C star. The star is orbited between five and seven planets and is part of a triple star system known as Gliese 667.

"We identified three strong signals in the star before, but it was possible that smaller planets were hidden in the data" said Guillem Anglada-Escudé of the University of Göttingen who led the study. "We reexamined the existing data, added some new observations, and applied two different data analysis methods especially designed to deal with multi-planet signal detection. Both methods yielded the same answer: there are five very secure signals and up to seven low-mass planets in short-period orbits around the star."

The Gliese 667 solar system is strikingly similar to ours and the three planets identified as habitable are confirmed to be super-Earths: planets that have more mass than Earth but less mass than larger planets like Uranus and Neptune.

"This is the first time that three such planets have been spotted orbiting in this zone in the same system," astronomer Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institute for Science who participated in the study said.

Similar systems have been found before and are very common in the Milky Way, however, most of these systems are built around Sun-like stars and are too hot to be habitable.

The Gliese 667C system is the first example of a system that contains multiple habitable planets surrounding a low-mass star.

The discovery of more systems like Gliese 667C could mean that the amount of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy are more numerous than believed.
