Ancient rock etchings found in Nevada could be oldest in North America Aug 14th 2013, 21:08 PYRAMID LAKE, Nev. –  Ancient rock etchings along a dried-up lake bed in Nevada have been confirmed to be the oldest recorded petroglyphs in North America — more than 10,000 years old. Larry Benson, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist who used radiocarbon testing to date the etchings, says the art on the limestone boulders could have been drawn as long as 14,800 years ago. The oldest previously confirmed site — at Long Lake in Oregon — is at least 7,600 years old. Benson says it has many similarities to the one just east of Pyramid Lake about 35 miles northeast of Reno. The abstract drawings feature tightly clustered geometric designs, some with diamond patterns, others with short parallel lines on top of a longer line.
