The National Zoo in Washington D.C. said it has lost a panda -- and is turning to social media to help with the hunt for Rusty.
Rusty, a red panda who turns one in July, was introduced to the zoo on June 10 from the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska. The introduction between Rusty and the zoo's other red panda, Shama, went well, the zoo reported at the time.
Apparently something changed, however, and Rusty has gone rogue.
Monday morning the zoo tweeted out that the animal was missing, having last been seen at 6p.m. Sunday evening, and requested the public's help in tracking him down.
Reached by phone, the zoo told FoxNews.com it did not have any additional information about he circumstances of the breakout.
The zoo advised anyone looking for the creature to take care: He will bite if cornered or scared. If you do see Rusty, stay where you can safely keep an eye on him and call (202) 633-4888 and alert the Zoo immediately, officials said.
Red pandas are arboreal, territorial animals, the zoo's Twitter feed added, so it would be unusual for Rusty to wander far from his home range, in his case his exhibit.
The zoo said it would keep its Facebook page and Twitter feed up to date in the hunt.
