Los Angeles – After days of speculation and rumors, Microsoft has unveiled its newest product: the 'Surface' tablet.
The tablet, which will be a competitor to Apple's iPad, was revealed by CEO Steve Ballmer at Milk Studios in Los Angeles.
Microsoft has been hit and miss with hardware. When the company misses, it does so epically -- remember the Zune.
On the other hand, the company's successes in the hardware space have become billion dollar innovations. Consider the billion dollar Xbox market or the mouse, which Microsoft pioneered.
The Windows 8-powered product is 9.3 inches thin, weights 1.5 pounds and has a 10.6 inch display.
Steven Sinofsky, the president of Microsoft's Windows division, called the device a "tablet that's a great PC --a PC that's a great tablet."
Other details on the product are still emerging.
The new Surface sure looks like it might be a hit -- one that flies in the face of 35 years of partnerships with other companies.
