How to watch today's iPad mini event live
Oct 23rd 2012, 15:30

Apple typically doesn't stream its press conferences live to the public, but the company will make an exception for its iPad mini unveiling later today.

Under the heading "Apple Event," Apple has added a new entry for an "Apple Special Event" on the Apple TV that is set to stream live beginning at 1:00 p.m. EDT, 10:00 a.m. PDT.

A brief history of the iPad

If speculation is correct, a mini iPad would follow three full-sized models. Here are Apple's iPad releases since its debut in 2010:

the iPad, April 3, 2010. Original model (announced Jan. 27, 2010).

the iPad 2, March 11, 2011. Faster processor, thinner. Comes with two cameras for taking photos and video chatting (announced March 2, 2011).

the new iPad (third generation), March 16, 2012. Faster processor, much sharper screen and improved camera (announced March 7, 2012).

Apple is expected to announce a number of new products beyond the iPad mini including new Mac computers, an updated version of iTunes and an updated third-generation iPad with a Lightning port and an optically bonded display.

Live blogs will be great for catching bits an pieces of today's event, but for those who want to see all the action as it unfolds and hear the news straight from the horse's mouth, Apple's event channel is free for all Apple TV owners.

All iOS devices will have access to Apple's live stream as well. As a BGR reader points out, users can simply open the following link in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to watch the press conference live: http://qthttp.apple.com.edgesuite.net/129opiygabsdvibsdfobsd3/atv_vod_mvp.m3u8

Apple will also be streaming the event live on its website, which means desktop and notebook PCs can also get in on the action using Apple's Safari browser.
