McDonald's testing complimentary iPad use
Oct 12th 2012, 12:13

A McDonald's in Virginia Beach is in the news after starting to offer free use of an iPad last week to its eat-in customers. But that's not the only place you'll find complimentary iPad use. If you're in need of a mobile fix, look around the next time you're at an airport or hotel.

When you're at the airport, check in food areas. Airport restaurateur OTG has started rolling out more than 7,000 iPads for use at airports including New York's La Guardia, Minneapolis-St. Paul International and Toronto Pearson International. The iPads use a custom browser that lets people order meals, check flight status, play games and more.

If you're staying at an upscale hotel, ask as well. Beachtree Properties provides iPads at its hotels in Oakland and South Lake Tahoe, Calif. The iPads have custom interfaces pre-loaded to help find restaurants, check weather conditions or play "Angry Birds." The Plaza Hotel in New York makes iPads available to its guests, too.

You may find more than iPads are offered. Hotel Indigo ran a pilot program this summer at its Newcastle, England, site in which paper Gideon Bibles were replaced by Kindle e-readers. (Users also could pay to download any nonreligious content.) The chain has not said whether it will continue the program.
